Overview

Egor Koshelev was born in Moscow in 1980. In 2003, the artist graduated from Stroganov Academy, majoring in monumental painting. In 2006 he defended his thesis on Tintoretto and obtained a PhD in art history. After graduation from the Academy, Yegor Koshelev participated in the annual exhibitions of the ‘Workshop’ project at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, where he was noticed by the gallery owner Vladimir Ovcharenko.

In his early period (2006–2010), the artist mingles the graffiti style and the late-Soviet academic tradition (paintings ‘True Friends’, 2005; ‘Rus’, 2007; ‘Hosanna’, 2007; ‘Gestalt’, 2009, etc.). His crystallized forms are shaped with fluorescent paint; he deliberately clashes the "high" and the "low". Artworks of this period were brought together at the first solo exhibition ‘Kinky Tags’ (2008), followed by the ‘Phobia’ project (2009).

In the early 2010s, Egor Koshelev switched to using softer figures, he less often uses graffiti fonts. He continues to play with quotes from classical and contemporary art and mass culture, composing riddles and messages "on the topic of the day." Over the past decade, he has been working a lot with the problem of the artist's place in the world – both by publishing theoretical works and constructing entire residences of imaginary creators (the ‘Palazzo Koshelev’ project, 2017).

The works are in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow, Russia), the Russian Museum (Saint Petersburg), as well as in collections in Russia and abroad.
