Overview

Nestor Engelke was born in 1983 in St. Petersburg. Studying at the Academic Art Lyceum named after B.V. Ioganson, he met artists Alexander Tsikarishvili and Leonid Tskhe - his future companions in the North-7 group. Engelke graduated from the Academy of Arts, majoring in architecture and later worked as an architect. Since 2013, he has been participating in North-7 projects. As part of the art group, he is a winner of the Present Continuous-2018 award of the V-A-C fund and the M HKA Antwerp, a participant of the parallel program for Manifesta 10 (2014).

In his personal projects, the artist often constructs the habitats of fictional characters: ‘The apartment of Professor A.U. Woodman’, ‘Woodman Architectural Bureau and Partners’, ‘Secrets of the Starry Sky of Enstor E.’ Engelke works in his own unique technique of axial painting, carving recognizable images from classical art and Russian literature in wood (series ‘Wooden Walks in the Hermitage’ and a series of "clumsy portraits" of writers, 2020), and cutting out architecture pieces in miniature (series ‘Wooden Portable Architecture’, 2017, and ‘Wooden Houses’, 2019).
