Overview

Erwin Wurm was born in 1954 in Bruck an der Mur, Austria. In 1977 he graduated in Art History at the University of Graz. Then, from 1977 to 1981, the artist studied sculpture — he attended the College of Fine Arts in Salzburg and the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Since the 1980s, Erwin Wurm has radically redefined the concept of sculpture. As a result, the artist often merges traditional media with performance, text, or objects of everyday life.

Erwin Wurm came into prominence in the 90s, after creating  his 'One Minute Sculptures.' The 'sculpture' itself was a short moment when the artist and his models performed unusual actions with everyday objects — a person balances on a mop or a chair, poses in shapeless clothes. Subsequently, Wurm exhibited these 'sculptures' as photographs or videos.

Since the 2000s, the artist has been creating 'fat' sculptures: swollen houses and sports cars representing the seek for constant economic growth. The volume of these objects correlates with their owners’ desire for wealth. Thus, volume — a genuinely formal aspect of sculpture — delivers a thoughtful comment on consumerism in modern society.

In the 2010s, the artist developed so-called Drinking Sculptures. Those are pieces of furniture with alcoholic beverages inside — so the audience could have a drink while sitting next to the object. Works of this series were presented at the Wurm retrospective in Russia, organized in collaboration with OVCHARENKO (until 2018 — Regina).
