Overview

Maria Serebriakova was born in Moscow in 1965. In the second half of the 1980s, Serebriakova came into prominence among Moscow artists. . During that period, her artistic approach was mainly based on black-and-white photography combined with painting. For example, she added missing parts to a photo of a chair in painting, re-discovering the principles of perception.
Nowadays the artist's style is distinguished by the same restraint, monochrome, and landscape subjects. The author no longer compares transparent and detached images with photography — they arise from the subconscious, which, according to Lacan, is structured like a language. Serebriakova's images are what come to mind when one says 'landscape,' not referring to a specific visual experience. They are achromatic, non-emotional; they embody the concept of metaphysics.
Serebriakova also works with sculpture. Her large structures and installations are breviloquent and minimalistic. Their semantic core is a visual paradox based on an unexpected juxtaposition of shapes and textures.
In 1992, Serebriakova represented Russia at Documenta. Since then, many outstanding projects have appeared in her biography, such as the New Berlin Festival of Arts, IV Triennial of Small Sculptures in Stuttgart, Art and Idea in Mexico City, 1st and 2nd Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art.
Serebryakova took part in such international projects as the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, the IV Triennale der Kleinplastik in Stuttgart, Art & Idea in Mexico City, and the Moscow Biennial of Contemporary Art (2005, 2006). In addition, she participated in exhibitions at the MoMA PS1 (New York, USA), the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, etc.
Since 1998, Maria Serebriakova lives and works in Germany.
