Andrey Roiter was born in 1960 in Moscow. In 1978–80, he studied at the Moscow Architectural Institute. In 1985, together with Nikolai Filatov and Germanov Vinogradov, he founded the Kindergarten squat. During the second half of the 1980s, Roiter created "homemade readymades", reworking the visual culture of the late Soviet space. Among the works of this time are the ‘Adidas’ object (1988) with the iconic trefoil, shown in 2020 at OVCHARENKO, ‘Mosconcert’ (1987) from the collection of the Kolodzei Foundation, and ‘They Open Our Eyes…’, mocking Sotheby's 1988 artists.

Roiter emigrated from the USSR in 1989. Since then, the artist has lived between Amsterdam and New York, sometimes visiting Moscow. He calls himself a "painter-tourist". Roiter's drive for redeployment is a consequence of the utopian hopes for constant change and self-transformation. Using the semantic aura of his works, the "artist-traveler" constantly changes his identities: now he is a voluntary exile, then, a mysterious stranger, an alienated "outsider", or an eternal tourist — hunter of impressions. Thus, the artworks construct their creator. Surprisingly, pieces do not have a recognizable manner, or any pathos of self-expression. The Seven Sisters, the symbol of the state and the era, and a tent, the universal temporary architecture of the nomads, are equally aloof.

During 30 years of his international career, the artist has been exhibited at the most prestigious galleries: Jack Hanley Gallery (New York, USA), Blum and Poe (Los Angeles, USA), Impronte Contemporary Art (Milan, Italy), Galerie Akinci (Amsterdam, Netherlands), Laura Bartlett Gallery (London, UK), etc. Andrei Roiter participated in the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art (2007, 2011, 2013). His works are in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris, etc.
