Overview

Daniel Richter was born in 1962 in Eutin, Germany. From 1991 to 1995, he studied at the Hamburg Academy of Fine Arts, where he met Martin Kippenberger and Werner Buttner.

In the 90s, Richter created abstract pieces characterized by intertangling structures and intensely colourful biomorphic forms between ornamentation and graffiti. By the beginning of the 2000s, the artist turned to figurative painting, introducing mythical creatures into his abstract compositions. His works refer to classical and contemporary art, to the realities of modern society, politics, and mass media — he translates them into the metaphorical language of his painting. The works of this decade were presented at the artist's solo exhibition at OVCHARENKO (until 2018 — Regina).

In the mid-10s, after a break, Richter returned to work and created abstractions that were significantly different from his early period. Сomposition elements were enlarged, forms — often close to anthropomorphic — were juxtaposed against a plain background.

Nowadays, Richter is one of the most prominent German painters: he was exhibited at the Pompidou Center, the Saatchi Gallery,;created scenery for performances and operas, in particular — for the opera Lulu staged by Vera Nemirova; gave lectures at the Berlin University of Arts and the Academy of Arts in Vienna.
