Rose Wylie
Rose Wiley was born in 1934 in the UK. In 1956, she received a degree in design at Dover School of Art. Later, she attended Goldsmiths College (London, UK) and then lectured at Denbighshire Polytechnic College. In 1979, at the age of 45, the artist continued her education at the Royal College of Art (Master's program in Cultural History). Since the 1980s, Wiley has regularly participated in College exhibitions. In the 90s, she began to cooperate with British commercial galleries (Reed's Wharf Gallery, Union Gallery, Transition Gallery). During the 2010s,, the artist became widely known on the international scene: in 2010, her first personal project in the United States took place at the Thomas Erben Gallery; in 2013, an exhibition was held at the Tate Museum; in 2017, Wiley exhibited at the Serpentine Gallery, and in 2018 — at David Zwirner.
Rose Wiley became famous for her expressive oil paintings. Covering all spheres of life — from everyday objects to art history and politics — Wiley redefines the "naïve gaze" in painting. The hierarchy is undermined both in the composition and in the plot of the canvas. Christian saints, tennis players, a stove burner — the artist minimizes differences between all phenomena with the help of illogical perspective and incorporation of text into the image. She places all the elements onto a single surface, which is compiled according to the principle of a collage. In Russia, Rose Wiley's first show was held in 2012 at OVCHARENKO gallery (until 2018 — Regina).
