Overview

Ivan Razumov was born in 1972 in Moscow. He received training as a stage designer, first, in 1987-1991, at the Moscow Academic Art Сollege, then, from 1991 to 1995, at the Moscow State Academic Art Institute named after V.I.Surikov.

He was influenced by the Soviet graphic tradition of the 1930s. In 1997, he began to work with book illustration for periodicals and classics of literature (works by Matsuo Bashō, V.V. Mayakovsky, A.S. Pushkin, V.A. Shenderovich, etc.). The artist applied graphics techniques to painting — thus, his works have a specific composition, endowed with the surrealistic displacement of scales and bright colors. In 1995-2002, he was a member of the St. Petersburg art circles, collaborated with Timur Novikov, Sergei Bugaev-Afrika, Vladislav Mamyshev-Monroe; created covers and illustrated articles for Viktor Mazin's psychoanalytic magazine "Cabinet." In the 2000s, after he returned to Moscow, he started several graphic projects in collaboration with Pavel Pepperstein.

The leitmotifs of his art are the clash and eroticization of the Soviet, Russian, and Western European images (pioneers, Lenin, Marx, the Kremlin, etc.). Plots are loosely based on cinematic and literary episodes, psychoanalytic theories, political and social events, and various myths of popular culture. Works by Ivan Razumov are in the collection of the Center Pompidou in Paris and private collections in Russia and abroad.
