Vladimir Logutov

Overview

Vladimir Logutov was born in Samara in 1980. In 1996–2001, he studied at the faculty of painting at the Art College of Samara; in 2002–2006, he attended Samara State University of Social Sciences and Education, majoring in fine art. In 2005, he obtained an independent art scholarship of the Stuttgarter Kunstverein e.v. (Stuttgart, Germany). Besides that, he was a co-founder and a member of the 'Laboratory' group.

From 2005 till the beginning of the 10s, the artist's major media was video. While still a student, in 2005, he showed the work 'Rubik's Cube' at the ArtDigital festival (a collateral event of the 1st Moscow Biennale). In 2007, the young artist took part in two Special Projects of the II Moscow Biennale: the 'Urban Formalism' with his video 'Expectation' and the 'Witnesses of the Impossible' with his video 'Episode.' Vladimir Logutov was on the shortlist of the Kandinsky Prize in 2007 (works 'Expectation' and 'Unnecessary') and 2008 ("Interpenetration of the Visible and Actual"). In addition, his video 'Pause' was featured in the collateral program of the Venice Biennale (2011).

By the end of the decade, Logutov turned to the painting. In the 'Boom' project for OVCHARENKO (until 2018 - Regina), he combined video projection featuring a dark post-apocalyptic landscape with bright luminous paintings, reversing the conventional qualities of these two media. Afterwards, in 2016, the artist presented the 'Meetings' project, which entirely consisted of paintings. There, he turned this traditional type of visual art into a curatorial project. "Exhibition-within-a-picture" is a concept still present in the artist’s work nowadays..

At the exhibitions 'The Conquered City' (2009) and 'The Industrial Ruins', the artist exhibited sculptural works. They were rails and metal gratings bent by workers of a metallurgical plant. And the video 'The Work' filmed during the production of the pieces reveals the participatory component of his art.
