Bratkov's works can be read as movie titles, as the very first frame allowing us to imagine the unwrapping of the plot. However, no matter where imagination leads us, it cannot change the critical direction set by the artist — melancholy.

  • Sergey Bratkov's artworks are united by the same compositional principle — the pieces usually involve two parts: a photo and a slogan written on a layer over it.     When looking at the artwork, one can't help but notice the sculptural, object-based character of the piece — this is due to the words being distanced from the photographic background. Speaking of emotion and abstraction — there's nothing more abstract and less emotional in the world of representation than a letter, a fundamental element of semiotics.

    Sergey Bratkov is one of the key figures of contemporary Russian art. He works with photography, video, installation art, painting, and performance. Bratkov is a regular participant in international projects. His works can be found in the collections of Multimedia Art Museum Moscow, Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp, Contemporary Art Center of Galicia, etc.
