Overview

Jack Pearson was born in 1960 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. He graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston in 1984. During his studies, he became close to the so-called "Boston School" — a group of artists who abandoned staged glamorous photography in favoгr of the aesthetics of amateur photography. Pearson's photographs often feature landscapes, city views, and situations snatched from everyday life.

Pearson employs a wide range of techniques: drawing, painting, photography, collages. In the early 90s, he began to create sculptures from the letter signs of old shops, casinos, hotels. The artist composes personal messages from fonts of different colours and sizes. Among them are proper nouns, phrases (Real Life, 2004), as well as individual words — fictitious (Deuce Lingo, 1991; Erosesor, 1997; Noung, 1998) or real (Sin, 2009; Night, 2010). A separate group is made up of the so-called Abstracts — fragments of broken old signs that the artist turns into abstract compositions. In 2010, the works of this series (Kouros, 2008; Composition, 2009; Abstract # 7, 2008) were shown at the first personal exhibition of Pearson in Russia.

In the late 2000s and 10s, he created a series of photographic posters with views of the beach, sky, mountains. Folded eight times and tacked up to the wall with buttons, they resemble posters that could hang in someone's bedroom. This is how the artist implements his iconic artistic technique: by using images from contemporary iconography and world art history, the artist reveals the experience common to Americans, hidden in popular culture. Thus, an impersonal object paradoxically speaks of personal experiences.
